Description This Partners Inkwell and Pen Stand by George Betjemann is constructed in gilded brass and onyx and is stamped “Betjemann’s” with reference number 3443. Designed as a true partners inkwell, the stand features a double hinged mechanism allowing it to open from both sides. The central inkwell is removable and housed within a square cut crystal body mounted in a gilded brass frame. The onyx base is engraved with a floral pattern and bordered with gilded rope work along the outer perimeter. The mounts are finished with engraved scrollwork and an ornate pierced bracket beneath the inkwell. Gilded pen rests are positioned symmetrically to either side, reinforcing the balanced design of the stand. The hinged inkwell lid is finely engraved and sits within a circular gilded mount. Such desks were commonly placed centrally within an office or library and used by two individuals facing one another. The double hinged construction of a partners inkwell allowed it to open from either side, ensuring equal access and practical use for both users. George Betjemann & Sons George Betjemann started as an apprentice cabinet maker from a young age working for his Father in Law. In 1848, his two sons George William Betjemann and John Betjemann joined him under apprenticeships until 1846 when George William Betjemann started his own business with his two sons. In 1859 George moved to a new premises on Pentonville road, London. This was when the business became known as ‘Betjemann & Sons’. John Betjemann was grandfather of the later famous poet laureate Sir John Betjemann. For further information see our Makers and Retailers page on George Betjemann & Sons.
