Rolex created the Sea-Dweller Deepsea to push the boundaries of what a mechanical dive watch could endure and to reaffirm its dominance in professional-grade horology.The Deepsea name traces back to the Rolex Deep Sea Special, an experimental watch that survived a 1960 descent into the Mariana Trench strapped to the outside of the Trieste bathyscaphe. That watch endured 10,916 meters (35,814 feet) of pressure. Rolex wanted to honor that legacy while offering a serial production model that could withstand extreme depths, hence the Deepsea.The D-Blue dial commemorates James Cameron’s historic solo dive. From brilliant blue to bottomless black, its two-colour gradient dial celebrates one man’s journey to the deepest place on earth: the bottom of the Mariana Trench.This proprietary case architecture allows the Deepsea to withstand crushing pressure with the Central Ring which is Nitrogen-alloyed stainless steel, the Case Back made from Grade 5 titanium and the extra-thick sapphire to resist deformation.
